Thermal/Solar Heating and Cooling
This class is about the passive heating and cooling systems of the Earthships.
Earthship are “passive” houses, which means they do not use any power to generate heat and cold. The unique way Earthships do that is by being “buried” under the ground, where the temperature is constant and well insulated.
To create a thermo mass, we used “Encased rubber bricks” or tires to build the main walls. This allow is to have a huge amount of dirt behind the building also and keep the building at the same temperature. Tires are ideal for so many reasons, we would not build with anything else!
The reason why we are able to maintain temperature and grow food in Earthships is also due to its orientation. When you purchase land, it is important to always includes the North on your pictures and mapping, so you would know which way your building should face to maximize light income.
We use the same concept for ventilation, using natural convection to create a breeze in the building when necessary. We achieve this mainly with the skylights, hopper windows and our “cooling tubes” integrated during the first few course of tires while we build.
